Hey all!
WHAT A DAY!
I woke up SUPER early this morning and made it to the airport to catch my flight to NYC. My flight from NYC to Santo Domingo was eventful, they were showing the Beyonce movie “Obsessed”. It was terrrrribblleee. Everyone clapped and cheered when we landed, which is apparently, a “dominican thing to do”. I was picked up by Kalie and one of her coworkers from Esperanza, which was extremely kind of them. I toured the Esperanza offices, learned about the GREAT things they are doing and met all the interns/fellows and people I’ll be staying with for the next two weeks. They are all incredibly nice and will be letting me stay in their apartment later on in the week. There are lots of young people here, so I think my weekends and nights will be filled quickly. Santo Domingo is beautiful! The water is gorgeous, most everyone is smiling and it is HUMID. It looks a lot like Zanzibar did…which means nothing to any of you except me. The streets are crowded and traffic is crazy, and there are little fruit stands on the sides of the streets. Apparently the passion fruit here is to die for; I can’t wait to try it!
We went to the Zona Colonial for dinner, which is the oldest part of town. I saw the oldest church in the New World! That part of town is so beautiful, with the old lamps dimly lighting the streets and all the mengue music bouncing off the old crumbly walls. I really think I'm gonna like it here!
besos!
